Return to teaching 2024-25

September 20, 2024 - Scott Hewitt

As the new academic year begins, I am excited to once again return to Leeds Conservatoire, where I will be teaching Software Environments Performance and Sound Creation. This year, the curriculum will focus on the fascinating world of building digital instruments and interfaces within dynamic software environments. With tools like Ableton Live, Max, and ChucK the aim is to equip students with the ability to create their own digital instruments, enhancing both their creativity and technical skills.

This year, my research will delve deeper into several areas. In addition to my ongoing work with digital instruments and interfaces, I am particularly interested in examining the future of one-to-one teaching. The way we deliver education is rapidly evolving, and I am keen to explore how new technologies can enhance individualised learning, especially in a creative setting.

I am also focused on the future of interaction in music production. With the rise of AI, machine learning, and virtual reality, the boundaries of how musicians interact with software and hardware are constantly shifting. This year, I will be looking at how these developments could transform the way artists create, collaborate, and perform. What might music production look like in the future?

Finally, the future of teaching with emerging technologies is a central theme of my research. As educators, we are in a unique position to adapt and integrate cutting-edge tools into our pedagogical methods. Whether it’s virtual instruments, AI-assisted composition, or immersive virtual classrooms, I am eager to explore how we can harness these innovations to shape the future of music education.
